The Benefits of Power Napping at Your Day Job

The Benefits of Power Napping at Your Day Job We’ve all been there, hitting the afternoon slump sitting at work trying not to fall asleep, reaching for coffee as an easy caffeine kick to get through the day. All you want is a quick power nap, yet, sleeping at work is known to be a big no-no. Sleeping is best known to happen at home in the comfort of your own bed, not at your desk once your 3 pm slump comes around. What if I told you research suggests getting in a little shut-eye throughout your workday to increase your productivity? It’s true, and it’s called power napping. How Counting Sheep on the Clock Can Improve Your Work Performance Call it what you want, but having a little mid-day power nap siesta actually holds profound benefits for your overall well-being. Typically, power naps range from 10 to 20 minutes long, and it is meant to revitalize you more than a cup of coffee. Research show this length of time is the sweet spot for midday sleeping, reason being, it’s just enough time for you to reap the benefits of sleep without dealing with “sleep inertia,” the groggy feeling you might be familiar with after sleeping for several hours. Here are the 5 benefits that come along with a quick snooze: Improve learning and memoryLess stressBoosts mood and creativityIncreased productivity and alertnessDecreased risk of heart disease Now, not all workplaces are open to the idea of you getting a couple extra Z’s on the clock. That being said, there are a couple innovated ways to getting your midday snooze in at work. Innovative Ways to Hit Snooze During Your Workday Take your nap early Most people find themselves a little lagged between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Know when you will need to take a quick power nap and hit snooze right when you know you will be getting tired. Find the right location Find somewhere that is comfortable to catch a couple Z’s. If your office has napping stations, catch a room, or cozy up in your car on your lunch break. Create an ideal sleeping environment Dim lighting and comfortable napping set up is ideal for a productive power nap. Always bring a blanket and a pillow to throw in the back of your car for some extra comfort whenever and wherever you go. Keep it brief Fifteen to 20 minutes is ideal for a power nap. Make sure to set your alarm and get back up to get your work done, even if you may not want to. Anything past that 20-minute mark will leave you groggy and foggy-brained. Take advantage of sleeping appsSleep Cycle: This app tracks how many hours you sleep each night and a rough analysis of how well you may or may not have slept.Relax and Sleep Well: For those of you that have a hard time getting to sleep, this app offers 4 free hypnosis sounds that will have you falling asleep in no time.Pzizz: Pzizz offers a variety of different music mashups to help you fall asleep sooner rather than later.Sleepo: Sleepo allows customers to create their own white noise music mashup. Whether you want to feel like you’re at the beach or out camping, this will have you right to sleep.Pillow Automatic Sleep Tracker: This app syncs to your Apple Watch allowing customers to view their sleeping habits, set alarms, and more just to make sure you are resting optimally. Wear the Right Attire We wouldn’t blame you if you wore loungewear, but unfortunately, this isn’t something workplaces normally let you show up in. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t invest in some comfy work-appropriate attire. How to Craft a Culture that Will Attract Millennials

How to Craft a Culture that Will Attract Millennials With millennials making up a significant chunk of the workforce today, its important that employers take into consideration what attracts them to a company, what motivates them and what encourages them to stay in a job. Though they want a lot of the same things from a job as previous generations, they tend to look for a lot more innovation and flexibility in a job, as well as looking to climb the career ladder at a faster pace. If the company culture does not suit the needs of millennial employees, it is likely that they will seek out new opportunities that are a better fit and a high turnover rate can be incredibly costly for a business, as well as disruptive. In order to retain their staff, employers must adapt their culture to meet needs and preferences of their millennial staff, so how can they go about this? Here are Rakunas top 4 tips for creating a culture for millennials.  1) Open communication Encouraging open communication in the workplace is a great way to make employees feel engaged and loyal to the company. By allowing all employees to share their thoughts and ideas, they will feel more valued and like they are making a proper contribution to the business. 9 out of 10 employees are more motivated when they know where their work is going and want their superiors to listen to their ideas. 2) Remove hierarchy Millennials dont have the same regard for authority in the workplace, as their older counterparts and prefer for everyone to be at the same level in terms of treatment and interactions. 79% of millennial employees would like their boss to behave as a mentor to them and if the table was turned 76% think their boss could learn a lot from them. 3) Flexibility Millennials have more of a work to live than live to work attitude, so they look for a job that allows them to have a good work-life balance. Employers can take this into account by offering flexible work hours, or the option to work remotely. 89% of millennials would prefer to choose when and where they work, than a 9-5 office based job and 77% say flexible work hours would make them more productive. 93% also say that they want a job where they can be themselves and dressing comfortably plays a part in that. 4)  Encourage friendships at work Build a sense of community and encourage friendship among colleagues by holding social events, such as work parties, drinks after work, team bonding activities, etc. These will help to break down barriers and allow employees to get to know each other on a more personal level, which will build a stronger team. 90% of millennials want a workplace to be sociable and fun.

Strategy Break Time, time, time. Marla Gottschalk

Strategy Break Time, time, time. Marla Gottschalk On certain days, 5:00 PM rolls around and I havent accomplished a single task on my to do list. Im doing things but arguably not the right things. Days such as this make me fully aware that it is advisable to take a quick look, every so often, at how we are utilizing our time. The level of distraction in our work lives has never been greater on-line, off-line, mobile. Meetings, e-mails, travel. With all of the elements competing for our attention its hard to know if we are making wise time choices. A few signs to be aware of: You dont seem to have the time to complete your best work. You dont have time to recharge or re-energize. You have little time to explore new contacts or projects. So, I pose this question: Are you an effective time-user? Thats a difficult question to answer. However, I am sure we can all agree that time is a valuable commodity, that commands respect. How Do I Put Together a Resume and Cover Letter?

How Do I Put Together a Resume and Cover Letter? One of the most common questions that I get asked, is how do I put together a resume and cover letter. With so many job seekers in today's economy that are trying to land the best jobs possible, having a good resume and cover letter is imperative. It shows that you have done your homework and have been seeking employment for some time. Here are some tips to help you make the process of getting one of these documents, much easier.First, you need to make sure that you are doing a good job search. Check out the latest job openings and try to be prepared for them. What exactly is required from a resume? Knowing what you will need to have on it will make your job easier and more comfortable.Second, it is important that you have a cover letter. A cover letter is needed for both the resume and cover letter. You want to make sure that you do not miss any opportunities because you don't have a letter to accompany the resume.Third, make sure that you have several copies of both your resume and cover letter. Many times, employers will ask for a short term job. This is something that you will need to include on both your resume and cover letter.Fourth, make sure that you use the job title that you are applying for as the header for your resume. You want to include this because there are many employers that will go by the first name of the person in the job posting. Some employers even go by the last name, but if the job posting states that the position is for the first or last name, then it is best to leave it as first or last name. Doing this will allow you to focus on what you will have to include on your resume, rather than the entire resume.Fifth, if you choose to use an interview letter to accompany your resume, make sure that you do not include the entire job opening, just the information that relates to the position. The interview letter should only contain information about the job opening. If you want to include more information on your resume, then you should have more than one resume.Sixth, be sure to keep everything simple and to the point. Don't overwhelm the employer with too much information. Make sure that your information is concise and easy to read. After you finish making your resume and cover letter, you should have a resume and cover letter that will definitely make an impact. When it comes to getting hired at a company, having a resume and cover letter are just as important as your resume.
